Achieve The Perfectly Healthy Smile With Dr.Tarek Hafez
“A successful smile makeover is when people come up to you personally saying “I love your smile” rather than “I like your teeth, where did you have them done?” says Dr. Tarek Hafez, a dentist at one of the world’s leading Cosmetic and Dental Centers in Dubai, Apa Aesthetic.
QMIN Magazine had the pleasure to interview Dr. Tarek Hafez to get a deeper perspective and a closer look at his work and his future plans.
Your dedication has allowed you to work with a preeminent name in Cosmetic Dentistry, the Award-Winning Cosmetic Dentist, Dr. Michael Apa. Why did you choose to work with Dr. Apa in Dubai specifically, and not in New York City?
Well, while I did finish my post grad studies at New York University I didn’t elect to obtain the dental license there and continue in private practice in the US. I knew I wanted to work in Dubai and I knew I must have been doing things right when I was asked to be a part the Apa team. To join a global team with clinics in New York, Dubai and LA delivering dentistry at this highest level gives that sense of belonging that I have always sought professionally. Also, as an Egyptian I obviously speak Arabic and understand the arab culture and so Dubai was the perfect fit.
What is it about working at Apa Aesthetic that presents a challenge for you?
“There’s a lot of competition in ordinary, with very little competition in extraordinary”. Read that in a book recently. We are an extraordinary clinic, with extraordinary personnel, so I guess the challenge would be not to fall within the comfort zone of what is ordinary.
And in your opinion what is the skill that you need to maintain and to even gain higher success?
I wouldn’t say there is a specific skill. Skills can be developed, sometimes in a short period of time even. I believe to be successful in life is to evolve personally and professionally. And that’s not possible without the matter of dedication, commitment and drive. “consistency over intensity” as I like to believe and that applies to every aspect in life. A big part behind why we are at the level that we are is that. That’s what separates us as professionals from others. Our constant energy to improve and be better at what we do.
Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years? What are your goals? Do you think Dubai is the right place for your work or do you have other plans to move somewhere else?
I honestly don’t know what the future holds, but I do know that I want this clinic and my work along with the team here to be the hub for Aesthetic Dentistry in the region, and I know it’s only a matter of time before this happens. Dubai is the ideal city for me, and I see a lot of potential for growth here.
What does creativity mean to you in the dentistry world? Do you consider yourself to be a creative Dentist?
Creativity stems from originality and in a way uniqueness. Here it comes down to the philosophy and approach to dental treatment. To me that is the creativity in dentistry. Our philosophy is very different to any clinic I know or may not know. Individually, each one of us in the all our clinics contribute something different to the team, an artistic touch or a specific approach or style to dentistry. We collectively come together to develop this process and end result that is simply extraordinary. So I guess yeah, in a way I find myself a creative dentist in a creative work environment.
An Apa approved smile can be quite expensive, so why do you think it’s worth investing your money into it?
It’s a seamless overall experience. For the patient it’s how they’re taken care of in and out of the chair. From the moment they walk in to the dental treatment and through the aftercare. The amount of professionalism from the personnel reflects the core values and quality of our clinic, and ultimately our fees. From a technical aspect, as they say “it takes a village”, it’s major teamwork between us dentists and our ceramists and an immense investment of time and effort to deliver a customized smile to every patient. We do everything handmade, from smile designing in the patient’s mouth to porcelain fabrication in our lab. We don’t depend on machines or outsource to anyone to design anything for us. Every beautiful detail on a tooth is accounted for in every smile makeover we deliver. And all these underpin what we call the “Apa experience”.
How do you differentiate yourself from other clinics?
There are a lot of cosmetic dental clinics in Dubai and there is a very high demand for smile makeover. Our clinic is different in many ways; we’re not a new clinic on the block, even though the Dubai office is only five years old, our unique approach to dentistry has been there in New York for over 15 years. We have been at the top of our game for more than a decade, constantly improving and delivering excellence to our patients, and that speaks for itself. And yes a big part of who we are is being famous for treating global celebrities, royal families and politicians, whom have a higher aesthetic demand being exposed to the public and trust us to provide and deliver a higher quality dental care that is far from the stereotypical concept of what an ordinary dental clinic is like.
Redesigning an individual’s smile to suit their face and enhance their appearance is not an easy task. What are the challenges that you face when you are doing a Smile makeover?
From a macro perspective the challenge comes from understanding facial cosmetic dentistry. Looking, evaluating and knowing how to structure the teeth properly to aesthetically fit around the gums, within the lips and furthermore how they naturally blend with the whole face. I then find it important to understand the wants and expectations of the patient to deliver something that caters around that. With that a facially aesthetic dental treatment is designed, and not just one that focuses solely around the smile area. Later that vision is communicated to our ceramists, the design, shape, color and artistic details of natural teeth are carefully delivered in our restorations, be it front or back teeth. My daily challenge falls in having all of my dental treatments looking, feeling and acting as a natural tooth. A challenge that we enjoy and look forward to very much.
A successful smile makeover is when people come up to you personally saying “I love your smile” rather than “I like your teeth, where did you have them done?”
Apa has launched a beauty kit, why would you recommend it? Why do you think this kit is important?
Apa Beauty offers both health and cosmetic benefits; it combines the latest advances in oral care with the quality ingredients and design of a luxury beauty brand. It’s a simple, effective oral care and beauty products that are engineered to enhance the smile, gentle enough to be used every day. These products are designed to fit beautifully into everyone’s lifestyle. The powerful ingredients help strengthen the teeth and brighten the smile. Apa’s White Toothpaste has Hydroxyapatite instead of fluoride. Hydroxyapatite – is one of the building blocks of tooth enamel – it helps to rebuild the surface of your teeth.
How long does veneers last? Does the patient need to replace it with new ones after this period? What aftercare treatments do you recommend for them to last as long as possible?
Porcelain veneers, when done correctly, can last longer than 10 years. Given of course that the patient maintains general oral health. At home by adequate daily brushing and flossing, regularly cleaning the gums every 3-4 months professionally and having the bi-annual dental checkups.
