Lulwah Al Homoud: Beyond The Grid at Tabari Space
Lulwah is born in Ryadh where she studied sociology at King Saud University, Saudi Arabia and received a Masters degree from Central Saint Martins, London, UK. She also trained under distinguished Pakistani calligrapher Rasheed Butt and was inspired by Egypt’s Ahmed Moustafa to learn the theoretical system of calligraphy.
Living between the United Arab Emirates and London, Lulwah exhibited at various location such as but not limited to Tabari Artspace, Dubai, UAE (2013), the Sharjah Calligraphy Museum, UAE (2015) and Hafez Gallery, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia (2016), the Sundaram Tagore Galleries in New York and Hong Kong (2011, 2012); AB Gallery, Lucerne, Switzerland (2014); Al Markhiya Gallery, Doha, Qatar (2017).
You can discover her work during her solo exhibition at the Tabari Artspace from the 30th of April till the 28th of June. Beyond The Grid is composed of a selection of abstract artworks which draw influence from traditional Islamic art, synthesising its characteristic motifs with the regular rhythms of calligraphy and geometry, and ultimately deconstructing them to create a new visual vocabulary.
Amongst the works in the exhibition will be several large-scale minimalist pieces that emulate the geometric forms of Optical Art in bold, singular colouring. Alongside these larger works, Tabari Artspace will show 50 silkscreens from Al Homoud‘s series 99 names of God, displayed as limited-edition bound books. The works, which originated from the artist’s fascination with written language and Arabic calligraphy, demonstrate a drive to break the rules of traditional Islamic geometric designs in order to create new codes where pattern and word become one.
Founded in 2003, TABARI ARTSPACE Dubai is dedicated to the promotion of Modern and contemporary Middle Eastern Art and Artists. TABARI ARTSPACE caters to the tastes and trends of the sophisticated Dubai art scene and the gallery’s discerning worldwide collector base.
